Democracy & Elections

While every citizen’s vote counts the same regardless of their income, wealthy individuals and corporations have much more power over our electoral process than regular people. Money, not ideals, morals, or hard work, is what powers political campaigns and keeps nearly anyone but well connected elites from winning most elected offices. Working class people don’t have thousands of expendable dollars to throw toward a candidate no matter much they want them to win. Ultimately, it’s nearly always the candidate with the wealthiest friends and most corporate donors that we are left with the choice of voting for. By getting big money out of politics and limiting contribution limits, it will level the playing field, so that candidates will have to appeal to voters based on their character, plans, and ideals, instead of just who has the largest piggy bank.

AS YOUR ASSEMBLYMEMBER, I WILL FIGHT TO:

  • Cap political contribution limits for individuals to $1,000.

  • Combat gerrymandering. When Democrats and Republicans alike manipulate our district maps for their own selfish political gain, it’s the citizens that suffer through lack of accurate representation. We need true, independent redistricting based on common-sense county, city, and neighborhood boundaries.

  • Enact term limits for Governor and State Legislators.

  • Incentivize voting in the form of a $100 tax credit for primary and general elections.

  • Pass automatic voter registration to increase participation and involvement for all citizens in the electoral process.

  • Make election day a state holiday and mandate stricter requirements for employers to permit ample voting time to all employees across all occupations.

  • Pass public contribution matching for state elections so regular working people have a better shot at competing against the wealthy, corporate-backed elites that the system currently works for.

  • Enact universal vote-by-mail statewide for every election. Colorado, Washington, Oregon, Utah, and Hawaii use this method and benefit from substantially higher voter turnout than we do in New York.
